Purple Top White Globe Turnip (Brassica rapa) is a classic heirloom variety cherished for its sweet, mild flavor and crisp texture. Dating back to the 19th century, this turnip features smooth, globe-shaped roots with a distinctive purple top and white bottom, typically reaching 3–6 inches in diameter. The fine-grained white flesh is excellent raw or cooked, making it a versatile addition to salads, soups, and roasted vegetable dishes. Additionally, the nutritious green tops can be harvested young for tender, flavorful greens, popular in Southern cuisine. This reliable and easy-to-grow variety matures in approximately 50–55 days, making it suitable for both spring and fall plantings.
Sow seeds directly outdoors 2–4 weeks before the last frost in spring or late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds ¼–½ inch deep, spacing 1 inch apart in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 3–4 inches apart once they reach 4 inches tall to allow adequate root development. Turnips prefer full sun and fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest roots when they are 2–3 inches in diameter for optimal tenderness, or allow to grow larger for storage. Greens can be harvested when young and tender. For best flavor, ensure turnips grow rapidly with minimal stress. Thin by harvesting and enjoying the small turnips ultimately aiming for a turnip every 6" to grow full-size. Harvest for winter storage after a few frosts for best flavor.

Radish Growing Resources
The Midwest, with its unique combination of diverse topographies, microclimates, soil types, and weather patterns, presents a distinct set of growing challenges. At Driftless Seed Supply, our deep understanding of these conditions, honed by years of experience as Midwest growers, informs every seed we produce.
Generations of seed production, coupled with rigorous trialing in partnership with regional farmers, have enabled us to offer seeds that are exceptionally well-suited to the Midwest's unique growing environment.
Our commitment goes beyond just supplying seeds. We strive to ensure that Midwest farmers and gardeners like you have access to seeds that are not only well-adapted to our region but also capable of producing outstanding yields. Each generation of seeds we cultivate here in the Midwest—rather than in distant, climatically different regions—enhances the adaptability and performance of our varieties, setting them apart from those offered by many other seed companies.
Additionally, our collaboration with small local farms for most of our seed production is a testament to our dedication to strengthening the Midwest's food system. This approach not only supports local agriculture but also avoids the need to rely on large-scale production facilities in distant locations, whether out West or abroad.
We ship anywhere in the lower 48 states of the US via USPS.
