Wisconsin 55 is a classic red heirloom slicing tomato developed for crack resistance, flavorful flesh, and strong field performance in humid, short-season climates. This indeterminate tomato produces round, scarlet-red fruits that ripen evenly, resist blossom end rot. Most fruit are around 8-10 oz, with some as small as six or as large as 1lb even ont he same plant. These plants tolerate early blight and septoria leaf spot, and are relatively compact, making them perform well with a simple tomato cage. With firm skin, solid flesh, and excellent uniformity, Wisconsin 55 is equally great fresh from the vine, in sandwiches, for canning, or freezing. A heavy producer that keeps setting fruit until frost, it’s a dependable choice for growers seeking disease resilience and high yield. (Note that it is sensitive to leaf mold when grown in high tunnels).

5-6 weeks before transplanting sow ¼" deep in 50 cell trays or 4" pots depending on transplant timing. Harden off in partial shaded environment before transplanting. Transplant after last frost date 24" apart in rows 4-6' apart. Plant deeply to encourage adventitioius root growth. Use basket weaving or vertical trellis methods to support plants throughout the season. Prune leaves up to 12"-18" to increase airflfow for disease reduction. Indeterminate varieties benefit from "suckering", the process of removing suckers from the plant.
