Days to Maturity

45-55 Days to Maturity. AKA Willem's Blauwe Groninger Kale.

Gently lobed, broadleaf kale with great flavor and heat tolerance. Tender throughout Midwest summers. 2' tall plants with long stems for bunching. This type of kale, in the Brassica napus species, is much more cold-hardy than other types. The species includes 'scotch' and 'siberian' types. Incredibly tender compared to most kales, excellent for both fresh eating, cooking, and preserving by freezing.

For spring crops, seed indoors 4-6 weeks before daytime temps reach 60ºF, then transplant, gently disturbing roots if root-bound. Can also be direct seeded in clumps of 3-4 seeds, then thinned at 3rd true leaf. Very hardy, and taste and tenderness improve in fall after first frosts.

Seed Source Information:

This kale originates from Experimental Farm Network's unique Blauwe Groninger strain which they introduced to US trade from seed provided by their friend Willem van Leeuwen. Our line of this kale has been grown for year's in Iowa by Ben and Cody. We nicknamed it 'Willem's Kale' because it was easier to fit on our seed packets, and we wanted this unique variety to seem approachable to Midwest gardeners. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do, and encourage you to support Experimental Farm Network.
