Medium Red Clover is a reliable, fast-establishing perennial cover crop that enriches soil and supports pollinators. With its dense growth, it suppresses weeds, prevents erosion, and fixes nitrogen in the soil through its root nodules—providing fertility for the next crop. Gardeners value it as a living mulch or soil-building green manure that thrives in a wide range of soils, including those with moderate acidity. Its bright red-pink flowers bloom midseason, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Perfect for vegetable gardens, pollinator borders, or as part of a crop rotation, Medium Red Clover is both functional and beautiful.
Sow Medium Red Clover in early spring or late summer when soil is moist. Broadcast seed at a rate of about ¼–½ lb per 500 sq ft, raking in lightly for good seed-to-soil contact. Seeds germinate best in cool soils and should be planted no deeper than ¼ inch. Clover thrives in full sun but tolerates light shade and slightly acidic soils. For use as green manure, mow or till before flowers set seed, typically 7–10 days after first bloom. Can be overseeded into existing crops or lawns for nitrogen-fixing benefits. Keep soil moist during establishment for best results. Does very well if frost seeded in February on top of soil, or frost seeded into winter rye or other winter grains.

The Midwest, with its unique combination of diverse topographies, microclimates, soil types, and weather patterns, presents a distinct set of growing challenges. At Driftless Seed Supply, our deep understanding of these conditions, honed by years of experience as Midwest growers, informs every seed we produce.
Generations of seed production, coupled with rigorous trialing in partnership with regional farmers, have enabled us to offer seeds that are exceptionally well-suited to the Midwest's unique growing environment.
Our commitment goes beyond just supplying seeds. We strive to ensure that Midwest farmers and gardeners like you have access to seeds that are not only well-adapted to our region but also capable of producing outstanding yields. Each generation of seeds we cultivate here in the Midwest—rather than in distant, climatically different regions—enhances the adaptability and performance of our varieties, setting them apart from those offered by many other seed companies.
Additionally, our collaboration with small local farms for most of our seed production is a testament to our dedication to strengthening the Midwest's food system. This approach not only supports local agriculture but also avoids the need to rely on large-scale production facilities in distant locations, whether out West or abroad.
We ship anywhere in the lower 48 states of the US via USPS.
