Add some height variety to your garden with the tall and beautiful Black Hungarian sorghum. Long, branching seed heads are rich in dark purple pigmentation and will rise above your garden like bursts of fireworks. The dark color of the seeds provide increased levels of antioxidants when eaten as grain, the long branches of the seedheads make them ideal for broom making, and the nutrition of the seeds are a tasty treat for birds. And of course, the stunning deep color also makes Black Hungarian sorghum a delightful addition to ornamental displays! First domesticated in what is commonly known today as Sudan, sorghum is an important global crop that is used for grain, broommaking, animal feed, and syrup production. Sorghum is drought and heat tolerant, and will therefore continue to be an important global crop in the future. This variety was brought to the US by Mr. & Mrs. Louis Gyorkos, gifted to them in the mid-1900s by Louis's brother in Hungary. The hearty seeds in this packet were grown by Rochelle Wiedenhoeft of Decorah, IA in 2023, an extraordinary drought year.
Sorghum can be direct seeded or transplanted. To direct seed plant ¼" 6-8" apart in rows 12" apart after last frost. Thin to 8-12". To Transplant, plant seeds in plug trays ¼" below medium 6 weeks before last frost. Transplant 8-2" in rows 12" apart.

The Midwest, with its unique combination of diverse topographies, microclimates, soil types, and weather patterns, presents a distinct set of growing challenges. At Driftless Seed Supply, our deep understanding of these conditions, honed by years of experience as Midwest growers, informs every seed we produce.
Generations of seed production, coupled with rigorous trialing in partnership with regional farmers, have enabled us to offer seeds that are exceptionally well-suited to the Midwest's unique growing environment.
Our commitment goes beyond just supplying seeds. We strive to ensure that Midwest farmers and gardeners like you have access to seeds that are not only well-adapted to our region but also capable of producing outstanding yields. Each generation of seeds we cultivate here in the Midwest—rather than in distant, climatically different regions—enhances the adaptability and performance of our varieties, setting them apart from those offered by many other seed companies.
Additionally, our collaboration with small local farms for most of our seed production is a testament to our dedication to strengthening the Midwest's food system. This approach not only supports local agriculture but also avoids the need to rely on large-scale production facilities in distant locations, whether out West or abroad.
We ship anywhere in the lower 48 states of the US via USPS.
